It almost feels like a lifetime ago that I was in Australia. To say I miss Aus would be an understatement. With everything going on, it’s hard not to look back at photographs from travels to appreciate the good times. However, this does make me excited for the good times ahead - which will come. When they do, that is uncertain, but I know that everyone will be eternally grateful when we can do the little things. The little things being everyday tasks, like taking the dog for more than one walk in the park, going to the supermarkets and the shelves being filled in abundance, going to a pub or bar with your friends and having a laugh in a beer garden. Or when you finish a shift at work, the weather is beautiful and you think “I’ll drive to my favourite spot to watch the sunset!”… I don’t think we will ever underestimate the importance of freedom when this is all over. This is such a strange time that is effecting everybody. Hopefully this is something we can pull through together by sticking to the rules, helping the vulnerable, supporting local businesses, and being a helping hand/support for key workers - who are working ten times harder than they usually do.
My future projects have been put on hold for the time being, I have seen this as a positive as I get to do more planning, update my website and portfolio, and I have also seen this as a time to work out how my photography can grow when this all passes. Although I am sure the creative itch will come - I’m now learning embroidery to help tide that over! I’m very lucky to have a part time job that is still needed, I cannot fathom how scary it would be to be a full-time freelancer at this time. If anyone needs help, an ear to listen, or just a good old (Skype) catch up - please reach out to me.
Without further ado, I shall stop waffling on and start showing you these images from Part I of my Surfer Series. When I was living on the Gold Coast, we hopped on the tram and bus to get to Burleigh Heads. Whilst walking the ocean view walk, we came across incredible surf spots and very talented locals shredding the waves. Scroll below to see the beginnings of Surfer Stories! I’m hoping this project will continue to grow, and that I can still get to Portugal at some point to carry it on!
I hope you liked these photographs, I would absolutely love to invest in water housing one day to get closer shots of surfers expressing themselves and their skill.
